Remembering Madelyn Linsenmeir

A family’s powerful obituary hopes to draw attention to opioid addiction

A young mother recently lost her life on October 7th after a battle with addiction. Madelyn Linsenmeir, who was a 30-year-old mother and loving daughter, was not going to go in vain if her family had anything to say. In her now-viral obituary, her family highlights Linsenmeir as a person and calls for more wide-spread understanding for those battling addiction.

The obituary includes points such as

  • Individuals suffering from addiction deserve respect, compassion, empathy, support, and faith
  • People should educate themselves about this disease [addiction]
  • “[Addiction] is not a choice or a weakness.”
  • “[C]hances are very good that you someone you know is struggling with [addiction].”

Linsenmeir’s family also calls for donations to the addiction recovery facility where she attended. Since the obituary has gained traction online, Turning Point Center of Chittenden County has received support from around the world. They applaud the courage of Madelyn’s family saying, “Their courageous act has helped change the face of addiction to one that is the face of a brother, sister, mom, dad, friend and neighbor. Addiction does not discriminate.”
