Millennials and Therapy – 5 Reasons Why Millennials Should Go to Therapy

It was once a stigma in our society but now has become somewhat a norm among the so-called millennials in our society. What we are talking about is mental-health therapy. Peggy Drexler in her article Millennials are the Therapy Generation talks about how more “20- and 30- somethings turn to therapy sooner and with fewer reservations than young people did in previous eras.”

Who are Millennials?

Millennials, also known as Generation Y, are individuals born approximately between 1981 and 1996. This generation is characterized by its significant exposure to technology during formative years, particularly the internet and social media. Millennials tend to value diversity, work-life balance, and social responsibility. They have experienced unique economic challenges, such as the Great Recession, and often prioritize experiences over material possessions.

Millennials and Social Media

There is a lot of pressure put on the younger generation by society to be perfect which can lead to depression and mental illnesses. The main reasons for this is the rise of social media and technology, which leads to a desire to reach out for therapy. Social media is a great place for millennials because it lets them see people they see as role models talk about their struggles with depression, and how it is okay to reach out for help. Because of this, more teens are getting therapy much earlier in their life than in the past. A lot of them try to find balance in their work/student and social life. Social media showcases a safer place for people to reach out and talk.

Millennials and Therapy – Why Millennials Should Go to Therapy

  1. Social Media – Social media was huge for millennials when they were younger. It still is! It was new and exciting, but it was also sometimes negative. Social media is a large reason why millennials may seek therapy. The apps can sometimes be negative for a person’s mental health and for millennials social media has become as normal as just talking to someone in person.
  2.  Major Life Events – Millennials have lived through a lot. Most millennials remember the tragic event of 9/11, living through the recession in 2008 and more recently the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020. Millennials have lived through a lot and seeking therapy is a powerful way to deal with the stress from those events.
  3. Student Loan Debt – Student load debt. Whew! Every millennial (or at least most millennials) deals with this struggle. Millennials are one of the most educated generations, but due to student loan debt (and of course other factors) they are not one of the richest/wealthiest generations. This type of stress can be a big cause of anxiety/depression.
  4. Anxiety/Depression – This is an easy one. Based on the reasons I listed above it makes sense why millennials may deal with anxiety/depression. Seeking therapy can be an impactful option to help overcome anxiety/depression.
  5. Improve Your Overall Mental Health – Like I said before. Millennials have lived through a lot of major events in their lives. There’s no surprise that a lot of millennials may suffer from mental health issues. Seeking therapy, being active, talking to loved ones, whatever it maybe are the actions millennials and all people struggling with mental health issues should do to live happier and healthier lives.
