What Is IOP?

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs) are the perfect treatment program for those experiencing severe behavioral or mental health problems. IOPs provide intensive weekday treatments in an outpatient setting. At Exult Healthcare, we specialize in Intensive Outpatient Programs for patients suffering from:

  • Severe Anxiety
  • Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)
  • Emotional Disorders
  • Alcoholism, Drug Addiction, or Chemical Dependency
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Who Is IOP For?

These supportive programs are an excellent solution for patients who require intensive behavioral healthcare, but do not need a higher-level of hospitalization or resident treatment. At Exult Healthcare, our IOP programs give you the freedom to come and go after every session – allowing to keep up with your essential responsibilities at home, work, or school.

Plus, Intensive Outpatient Programs are generally less expensive than residential treatment in inpatient environments. Our Exult Healthcare IOPs include:

  • Individual, Group, and Family Therapy Modalities
  • Establishment of Coping, Communication, and Anger Management Skills
  • Dialectical (DBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Mood Stabilization Therapies
  • Relapse Prevention and Recovery Support

Frequently Asked Questions: Intensive Outpatient

In the Intensive Outpatient Program, you receive services primarily through group therapy, but are also assigned an individual therapist you will meet with while in treatment. Groups are small and generally do not exceed 10 people, allowing for a safe and comfortable environment.

Although you will receive treatment in a group setting, your treatment program will be tailored to your individual needs and you may be may be referred for additional comprehensive mental health treatment, visits with our psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner, nutritional counseling, and/or training in how to increase healthy life skills.

Talking about personal experiences and hearing the experiences of others; help you to understand the reasons for your symptoms, how to control them, and develop coping mechanisms.

At an inpatient treatment facility, you live in a residence area, usually a shared dorm room, under the rules and governance of the operators of the center. Each treatment center is unique with its own set of requirements, but you generally give up control of your day to day life while in treatment. Travel is sometimes required for inpatient treatment, and sometimes travel is desired. For example, some people choose to go to Florida for inpatient rehab, and live in a treatment facility for the duration of their rehab. For the typical rehab experience lasting 30 days, this can mean a significant time away from work, family, and personal obligations.
With an outpatient program you continue to live at your own home. You remain in control of your own life. You can still go to work or get a job, and begin rebuilding your personal life, with the help and support you receive from the program. You are responsible for participating in the treatment programs according to your scheduled treatment plan.
In the Intensive Outpatient Program, you continue your life with support from the local clinical, emotional and peer support systems provided by the IOP.

You will learn about both the 12 Step approach and SMART Recovery in our IOP sessions. With the help of your clinical team, you will be able to chose which support system is the best fit for your personal recovery. In fact, many participants find that both SMART and 12 Step can be used to support their recovery efforts.

Research has shown the individuals whose families are involved in treatment have a much better prognosis and a higher success rate. Exult Healthcare will make a concerted effort to include family members in treatment whenever possible. The goal of the family education program is to provide family members with information and support that will assist our clients in their recovery.

Currently we have IOP groups that meet in our McKinney location on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Groups are held in the morning or evening to fit with your schedule.

Your important initial clinical assessment will determine your suitability for the IOP treatment program. In some situations, detox may be required. If medically-supervised detox is required, you will learn the specifics of that requirement for your custom treatment plan, and you will be referred to available professional detox services that are a fit for your situation, prior to starting the IOP program. You will also receive important, helpful counseling about your needs and treatment options as part of your assessment.

The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is designed for people who are struggling with problems associated with addictions, substance use and abuse, we also offer IOP’s for Binge Eating Disorder, Depression, Anxiety, Bipolar Disorder, and Trauma.

Eligibility for the IOP is determined by a mandatory clinical/medical assessment, which is conducted at the center as part of the admissions process. The intensive outpatient treatment program is customized for each person, guided by the initial assessment and follow up.

Our IOP(s) usually runs for a period of 8 (eight) weeks but every patient is different. Substance Abuse can be 16 weeks and Mood disorders usually average 12 weeks.

Yes, an assessment is required for admission to the Intensive Outpatient Program. An IOP treatment is tailored to the individual by a Master’s level professional clinician who uses information gained in the introductory interview and assessment.

Yes, insurance plans will cover IOP when indicated. We work with most insurance plans and can assist in the referral authorization process. If you want to know more about your health plan and if IOP is a covered benefit, call our office today. 469-714-0006
